forward with barack obama's agenda and republicans had better realize it and cooperate this time and stop stabbing barack obama in the back. it's a great victory friends. you're all part of it, enjoy it, cell bray it with a big smile all day today. we'll talk every aspect of last night's election, the white house, senate and the house. first here's the latest, today's current tv update from lisa ferguson in los angeles. good morning. >> hey bill, good morning everyone. a great victory indeed. let's talk a breakdown of how that worked out. he's coming away with 303 electoral votes, florida is still up in the air although the president does have a lead there right now of half of a percentage point. now, it's important to note that obama took nearly every swing state, including colorado, ohio, pennsylvania virginia, and wisconsin. those last three really

contributed to his win and to the fact that we were able to call the race relatively early last night. if you remember yesterday, there was speculation that the count could go on for several days in the event of a close race. the popular vote is very close at 50.2% to 48.2, just a difference of two points there but with nearly 100-point spread in the electoral vote, it's really no contest. congressional seats democrats did not gain control of the house, which was to be expected, but they did maintain control of the is that the, picking up seats in indiana and massachusetts, a big win there for elizabeth warren against scott brown. we're still waiting on results from montana and north dakota but departments have the lead right now. the two independents, king from maine and sanders from vermont are expecting to caucus with the democrats, right now 53 democratic seats to republican 45 and that could go up to 55 if

leading. that would be a pick up, north dakota would be holding on to the seat and jon tester would be reelect the. so a great night in the senate 53 to the republicans 45, democrats could get up to 55 if those two go the other way. they look like they're going to go and then house of representatives not such a good night for democrats in the house. the margin stays about where it was last time around, 108 it's now at 186 democrats, 231 republicans, but there were some important victories there. allen for democrats allen west, the nuttiest of all members of congress, which is really saying something, was defeated in florida. >> yes. >> bill: michele bachmann, almost, almost lost, oh, man we came close but joe walsh was trounced by tammy duckworth a

goaim.org. if you watched current tv last night, you saw the team led by vice president al gore from san francisco and eliot spitzer host of viewpoint up early on the west coast this morning. eliot, i owe you one this morning, i tell you. how are you? >> it is early but we're happy none the less. who's complaining? >> bill: after all the talk about this could -- man, it's going to be a long, long night it could go on for weeks, for months, he might win obama might win the electoral vote but never the popular vote. it turned out to be a pretty substantial decisive victory last night. >> it was decisive, it was overwhelming. we had a little bit of a discussion debate almost on the set last night whether it was a landslide or not. chenk not surprisingly called it a landslide from the get go.

i was a bit more modulated on that on the theory that the popular vote is still pretty close. i mean the electoral college as we know accent waits visually what is sometimes a margin on the popular vote. everything went the president's way in terms of winning the senate, in materials of losses for the rob bid conservative tea party candidates and idealogy that had driven the republican voices. they've got to be waking up this morning almost shell shocked. >> bill: do you think on the republican side any of the saner voices who were saying look, guys we've got nothing going in the latino community the african-american community nothing going for women we're losing senate seats to all these -- tea partyers, any of these saner voices going to he prevail on the republican side. >> i don't pretend to understand that psyche and i'm glad to say that. i don't know, but that is really

the critical question right now not only in terms of will the republican party make itself more electable in the future which matters in terms of how our politics looks and plays out, but also how john boehner and mitch mcconnell will negotiate. will they continue to be held hostage by a rabid right or will they come back to a more traditional loyal opposition where they disagree and say all right, here's where we disagree but we've got to compromise. i don't know. i think in a way the shellacking that they got, we were hoping michele bachmann, it would be good if they really understood that. >> bill: joe walsh and allen west those are two who will no longer be there, michele bachmann came close. what do you think this means now

for president obama in terms of his agenda? right? there's no reason to hold back now. >> no, there's an understandable sense of he's not playing for a reelection he's less constrained and i don't say this cynically. there is a freedom in the second term, a sense that i am now going to be decisive and think about not only history but be purely concerned with what is right and necessary. having said that, this comes down to a little bit the question of was this a shelacking of the tea party or an embrace of what the president is seeking to do in a second term. we had that discussion on the set, as well. where does climate change fit into this. we didn't hear about it during the campaign. is he free now to endorse it or

is that a bridge too far. >> bill: you would think, one would hope that an issue like climate change integration reform and there are others that he held back the employee free choice act that he held back on in the first term. no reason to hold back now. >> absolutely not. the other dimension to this is he said the republican party has got to realize that the rejection of virtually everything that the tea party brought them to stand for is merely going to get worse in terms of the structure and demographics of the electorate going forward. they were clearly a party of angry old white men and the latino vote and gender gap were hugely decisive factors in making them -- leaving them isolated. if they don't confront that, they're nothing. if they realize it, they'll want to come to the table on the

issues that have made them a majority party. >> bill: i was reading this morning howard fineman from newsweek and now with huffington post said obama didn't just win reelection. his victory signaled the triumph which of a new 21st century america, fully racial, multi-racial moving beyond the centuries of sexual, marital and religious tradition that republicans represents that new wave. so does the democratic party. you just alluded to this, republican party seems stuck in the past. >> look, i hope that howard is right. i think it's certainly a fair lesson at a take from last night. my only note of caution is that we have a tendency, understandably so to overread the meaning of the elections

both the night of and the morning after, and recently, there were people who were saying that the republican majority was itself irreversible, then i think that that is something that you need to realize. >> bill: yeah, before we, i guess get too rambunctious about what this means and what we can do with it approximate in remember those days. it was karl rove, by the way who said that this was going to be a republican party forever now right? absolutely and now he, it was on t.v. last night on fox apparently. i didn't see it, because i was watching current and we were there, trying to pretend that somehow, i think ohio or florida, one of the states that had been called. >> bill: ohio. >> that they called it prematurely. >> bill: karl rove said that was wrong, that was wrong. he was trying to recreate florida in 2000, eliot. hey, we did this once before, we

can cow the networks into changing their call again and even the fox number crunchers said no, the call was right they were 99.95% certain that the call for ohio was correct. >> it was from the very beginning, there wasn't a number that went in mitt romney's way. >> bill: yeah. >> in any swing territory demographic race, it was a simple outright rejection of the craziness, lack of reason, lack of base in fact, logic thoughtfulness, inability to answer. if there is a groove of leaders in the republican party they must be scratching their head this morning saying we really fundamentally failed. >> bill: you've been through many campaigns, of course we're talking with eliot spitzer early on the west coast the current t.v. host seen on 8:00 p.m. are you going to do the show from san francisco tonight?

>> i will be here tonight as well, then heading back to new york tomorrow after we check back in to see how bad the nor'easter is. it's supposed to make landfall tonight. >> bill: i was just going to ask you then, you've been through many campaigns. how do you explain for the last 10 days to two weeks the romney campaign, all we've heard is this exuding confidence. i mean this thing is in the bag we're going to get florida virginia, we got them, we're going to get pennsylvania, weaver got extra time on our hands, we're even going to go get pennsylvania. were they just blowing smoke? >> there is some element of will it and it will become reality and hope that the press creates that sensibility. well, until hurricane sandy, all the polls showed that it was really a much titler race, and let's again look at the reality that the popular vote was still rather close.

>> bill: right. >> and it could very well be that it took, again you hate to see a tragedy like sandy crystallizing votes, but the whole emotional content of the electorate shifted because people saw it wasn't just a storm, a bit of distraction for mitt romney, it showed the public what government was about, the slogan should have been after that, who rebuilt that, the public really saw and i think we talked about that on the show, the necessity of a government that builds, that comes in was clear to everybody. good 2% to 3% have the vote right there. >> bill: i remember the headline a big storm requires big government. they really summed it up. eliot, we'll let you go back to bed. get another hour of sleep. thank you for getting up for us this morning. >> it's great to get up today. >> bill: congratulations to you and all the current team, as

equality. >> there were two big big wins in maryland and maine with marriage equality, both approved. they've had this as a popular vote 32 other times and it hasn't won 1998, it's been a 32 state losing streak, both voting for marriage equality last night. minnesota, they were trying to outlaw gay marriage. they shot that down, which is a big victory. also washington state very close there, as well, but it looks like another win for marriage equality in washington state. >> bill: and with pot legalization of marijuana yes yes in colorado and washington state, it carried in both states. in california, governor jerry brown's very, very important measure to raise new revenue passed proposition 30, big victory for jerry brown and the people of california. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show."

with a little more cooperation with republicans in congress than he got the last time around but four more years of barack obama, just what this country needs a great victory for us. enjoy it, celebrate it. wear a big smile today all day long starting right here with the full court press and we'll get right to it, take your calls and comments on twitter and facebook, but first we get the latest from lisa ferguson out in los angeles with today's current news update. hi, good morning. >> hey bill, good morning everyone. it is history in the making not only for the president this morning, but also for voters in maine and maryland, a huge win for gay marriage rights there for the first time ever, voters chose to legalize same-sex marriage on the ballot. some states have legalized through court decisions but neve before in the voting booth. even though it has been on the ballots in more than 30 states. the issue was also up for a vote in minnesota and washington and we're still waiting on the

official result there but it looks like both will allow it. in colorado and washington, recreational marijuana is now legal. this is the first time any state has ever completely legalized marijuana, not to mention two in the same election. now, look, this is not just a win for marijuana smokers. it also has huge potential effects on the drug war. illegal possibility sales are right now fueling the rise of drug cartels in mexico and south america and we will see how this impacts that moving forwards. >> in a couple of initiatives in california that i want to talk about, proposition 30 did pass. this is just coming in within the last hour and it is huge news for university students who will now be able to avoid a $2,000 mid year tuition hike. the prop raises $6 billion to prevent funding can it is to education. prop 34 did not pass which would have boll issued the beat penalty and prop 37 failed which would have required the labeling

great night folks celebrate it savor it, enjoy it, pop out the champagne whatever, president obama coming through at this .303 electoral votes 206 to mitt romney. president obama winning decisively the electoral college and winning the popular vote. you don't have to win remember, john f. kennedy won by less than 1%. you don't have to win by 10%. president obama won but it looks like 2%. in the battleground states, president obama, there were nine of them, president obama won outright seven flat out. of course, ohio was the big prize, as well as virginia on top of them he also won pennsylvania, new hampshire michigan nevada and wisconsin florida is still up for grabs but obama has been leading. i think he led almost all night long in florida it's just that

because rick scott tried to suppress the vote, some people had to vote so late in florida that they may still be counting votes, whatever. the vote is just not all in in florida, but it looks like it's going to go president obama's way, as well. the only state sadly that did not follow the trend was north carolina. barack obama won it the last time and mitt romney got it this time. peter, overall a good night in the senate for democrats, as well. >> very good night in the is that the, one we didn't mention earlier is in hawaii, hirono, the first senator born in japan was elected last night in hawaii. also, up and down, sherrod brown in ohio won his reelection. >> bill: with us yesterday again. >> huge win in massachusetts elizabeth warren kicking out scott brown taking back ted kennedy's seat. in virginia, tim cain beating

throw at us. steel badger said the republicans have some seoul searching to do, the republicans are soul searching? good luck to them in finding a cowl. >> another, the big losers are rove, koch brothers, sheldon adelson. >> bill: $100 million. i don't know what he got for it. >> i guess he's doing better in his casino than the gambling in the election. >> bill: a lot of talk about we wouldn't know who the winner was, it might take weeks, it turned out to be a pretty decisive victory. >> that's a big part of the victory, looks like the president will win all but one of the battleground states, north carolina, florida is trending his way. i expect them to calm it hopefully soon. >> bill: yeah. >> but that's a really big story. he won the popular vote, there

was no split decision, so that, i think gives the president a really strong hand with respect to the proposals on the economy on taking a balanced approach to our long term deficit challenge and a real boost in confidence. people say we trust you mr. president, to continue the work that you've begun. >> bill: you have to give credit to barack obama who has proved he's a phenomenal candidate. you're a strategist as well and run a lot of campaigns and have overseen a lot of campaigns. that was damn well run. >> it was. theythey had a great field organization and they began building that right from the end of the last election. they had a great grassroots movement and what they did. >> bill: they never went away. >> they turned it into a really good organizing effort in those

battleground states. i was out in iowa shortly before the election, you could see that they really had a great team on the ground. i was down in other parts of the battlegrounds, same thing. >> bill: i was impressed by the fact that in ohio, it wasn't just they had people wherever in ohio. they targeted like laser focus where they needed the vote in ohio, where they needed the vote in florida. that's where they have the field offices and the ground organization. >> that's exactly right. they had great organization, but they also had the winning message on balance and that's very clear and so when we hear some of our republican colleagues already begin to go draw a line in the sand and issue ultimatums, clearly they didn't get the message in this election. we'll have to see what speaker boehner says later today but his preliminary state was very uncompromising, even as the president last night said he was willing to work with the congress and try and look for

common ground. >> bill: i want to come back to that in just a second, but let's look at senate. it wasn't so long ago that people were saying oh, you know, maybe, maybe if they're really, really lucky democrats can hold on, but republicans, look at the numbers, right? 33 seats up, democrats had to con tend for 23, republicans only 10, it looked like they had the advantage. >> exactly. >> bill: what happened? >> there's another example. two things happened. one is a terrific round of candidates. people were on their side on the issues. then of course you had in indiana, and missouri, you had these far right tea party republican candidates, who just went down in flames, and in the house, of course, while obviously we didn't win back the house, the reality is a lot of the high profile tea party candidates lost, people like allen west and others. >> bill: and joe walsh.

>> and joe walsh, some of the top tea party candidates. >> bill: they keep doing it to themselves. they nominate these candidates who are so far just wing nuts, so far to the extreme this time with todd akin and richard mourdoch. it's like a suicide risk, almost. >> so the fundamental question for the republican party is whether or not they're going to have voices that lead them toward a greater moderation, away from the tea party extreme or whether or not they're going to double down on the tea party extreme. a lot of these house members face primaries where people run to their right. >> bill: yes. >> so they've got themselves in sort of a political death spiral here because they keep running to the right, even as the country sends them very strong signals that that's not where the majority of americans are. >> bill: and so, but, you know, i am convinced i'll belt you if

he hasn't already done so, i'm sure jim deminute, sort of the leading tea partyer in the congress has already thrown mitt romney under the bus saying we could have won if only we had a real conservative. >> if that's the winning side of the republican post-election debate. it just spells more troubles for republicans, because they've already alienated significant parts of the electorate and that will just be a recipe for alienating more. on the one hand, you say be my guest but on the other hand for the good of the country it really is important that we have some responsible republican voices who are willing to step up the plate and help solve some of these challenges. >> lindsey graham was quoted saying we can't win without some outreach to the latino community, the african-american

community, women if we keep cutting owl these constituencies off, steve smith was quoted in huffington post-"this is, this will have to be the last time that the republican party tries to win this way." >> well, look, lets take immigration reform. we had at one time mccain, going from members supportedder a bipartisan solution to mitt romney saying he would veto the dream act which just says we're going to allow young people here who have grown up here and came here through no fault of their own to be able to go to school and college and help make a productive for a productive america. of course, when it comes to. >> like marriage equality, the republicans were on the wrong side. you had four states last night

including my state of maryland, my public referendum endorsed marriage equality. that is a sea change in the attitudes of the country. >> bill: yeah, and in terms of repealing obamacare right saying they're going to turn back the dodd frank wall street reforms, get rid of contra septemberives for all women of america. they go after declare war on almost all these constituents and wonder gee, why aren't they voting for us. >> they tried to replay the 2010 mid term strategy. they tried to double down on that not realizing that the country saw what the tea party congress was like and didn't like what they saw. after all you had a congress that was at the lowest public approval rating in our recorded history. that was the response to the tea

can, i'm just going to go for broke right now? >> the president's got to have a new spring in his step. he's always been an optimist, but this has got to boost his confidence, because it was not just a win, it was a big win and the republicans throughout this election said this was a choice election. they painted this as two different paths and they said, i remember paul ryan saying if the republicans win, they will have a mandate to adopt what became the romney-ryan budget. well they didn't win so the obvious question to republicans is if this was a choice election and the people chose the president for reelection, doesn't that mean it's time for you to at least compromise and look at what the president's put forward. >> bill: we don't expect them to give obama everything he wants or democrats everything they want, but at least to sit down, which you have seen in your position as ranking member of the budget committee they're unwilling to do, solve the

problems, like the fiscal cliff. this is the first one congressman and yet last night before the networks had declared obama the victor, right john boehner was saying whatever happens tonight this doesn't mean we're going to change our position on taxes. >> this is why it was so counter productive of speaker boehner to lead with that. essentially, he was drawing a line in the sand on an issue that was part of the -- at the center of the debate in this election. the president could not have been clearer that if you want a take a balanced approach to deficit reduction, you've got to ask the very wealthy to go back to paying the same tax rate they were on the clinton administration. 100% of the american people get tax relief on their first $250,000 of income. the president is saying we need to reduce the deficit ask the wealthier to pay a little bit more because if we don't it

means everybody else takes it on the chin harder, cuts to education, infrastructure and the economy and seniors on medicare get whacked harder. that was a big part of this. >> bill: absolutely. the president was very clear about his plan, mitt romney not so much, but we know on that issue, there were two paths and the american people chose the balanced approach, with president obama. i do have to ask about this, so, if you look at where we started we started two years ago with democratic in the white house republicans controlling the house, democratic, the senate. the numbers might change a little bit but we spent $6 billion, $6 billion was spent, i heard last night a million t.v. commercials and we're right back where we started. what does that mean for this electoral system and impact of money on the system. >> well, i think at the presidential level both candidates had the financial resources they needed, between the amount of money they raised

for their own campaigns and mitt romney raised over a billion dollars, the president close to a billion dollars and the super pac money while the republicans may have had an advantage in the presidential, the reality is both candidates were competitive financially. i still do worry a lot about the i am fact of a lot of the secret money and so you said money in house races congressional races, because you drop a million dollars or $2 million at the last minute into a house race, it can make a big difference. >> bill: that's what they did came into senate and house races. >> we'll have to do an analysis of the house races to see to what extent that made a difference that last minute money, but regardless, the center for responsible politics has shown between $300 million and $400 million, and undisclosed secret money was spent primarily from republican leaning outside groups, and that is bad for accountability. it undermines transparency and

trust and confidence in our political system. we need to pass a disclose act. every american has a right to know who is spending the money to try to influence their vote. >> bill: that was your legislation. >> we passed it out of the how the. the senate blacked it. the republican party put in their platform this year, their opposition to disclose. they said to the american people as partly of our republican platform, we don't want you to know whether you're republican or democratic or something else, we don't want you to know who is spending all this money to try to influence your vote. >> bill: we want people to be able to buy elections without your even knowing who is buying it. >> it's bad enough so much money is going in. they're saying this is secret money, we're going to keep this in the shadows nobody has a right to know. >> bill: unbelievable. congressman, you got your work cut out for you. i'm gladly you're there. welcome back, congratulations. >> thank you so much. >> bill: thank you for coming in

he built a great record in the last four years. he's a great candidate, ran a great campaign. he deserved to win while republicans meanwhile got stuck with old mitt romney, a lousy candidate with nothing to run on except the fact that he was not barack obama and would repeal everything that barack obama had accomplished in the last four years. that's not enough to win on. for republicans, i think it's a powerful message in last night's returns, that the american people have had enough grid lock. they want to move forward with president obama's agenda. they know what it is. they want republican to say start cooperating with the president instead of stabbing him in the back. in other words america is calling john boehner. are you listening? all right that's my parting shot for today folks. keep that big smile on your face all day long. major garrett will join us in studio tomorrow.
